Thomas Jonathan Jackson has been ordered to hold in the Shenandoah valley, west flank of the Virginia front and to fix around the federal forces that could strengthen the operations against Richmond.
As Nathaniel Prentice Banks is splitting his V corps to reinforce Washington DC, Jackson strikes Shields' division at Winchester.
But at Kernstown, a village south of the town, Nathan Kimball is ready to fight, with superior numbers and a powerful artillery on Pritchard's hill.
A frontal assault would be insanity and the first goal is rather the stone wall, on the western Sandy ridge.
